Localizing SDGs –Creating a Network of Sustainable Development Goal Regions
The World Organic Forum 2020 focuses on the local implementation of Agenda 2030 with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for a just and sustainable world. Thematically, the focus is on the SDG goals "Eradication of poverty" (SDG1), "Food security" (SDG2), "Sustainable consumption and production" (SDG12) and "Climate protection measures" (SDG13).
How can these goals be successfully implemented in rural regions through a bottom-up movement? Which building blocks do the SDGs offer for regional planning? These and other questions will be discussed with representatives from politics, research, business, and civil society from countries of the North and the South. Together, we want to learn about examples that show how regions are moving towards local implementation of SDGs and how the local and global levels are interlinked in rural areas. The conference will provide space to get to know lighthouse projects and to develop and discuss quality criteria for "SDG model regions".
The World Organic Forum 2020 is the starting signal for new cooperations to promote the regional implementation of SDGs and their exchange worldwide. The aim is to establish an international network of SDG regions. A broad number of regional initiatives from Germany and abroad will participate. The opening speech will be held by the honorary president of the Club of Rome, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. The “Haus der Bauern” foundation will organise an international congress on the issue of “peasants’ rights” from 8-10 March 2017, which will be attended by lobbyists for small farmers worldwide as well as representatives of international organisations and numerous stakeholders.
The 'Global Peasants' Rights' congress sheds light on the situation of small scale farmers and the rural population around the world, draws public attention to the importance of peasants for sustainable local and regional production of food in agro ecological quality and emphasizes the need to protect their rights and their indigenous knowledge.
The goal of the congress is twofold: to increase awareness of the situation and the requirements of international small farmers and to support the UN working group for the development of a “Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas”.
The “Haus der Bauern” foundation therefore contributes to coordinated actions together with other organisations and stakeholders such as La Via Campesina, Brot für die Welt and FIAN whose goal is to promote this urgent project in the responsible UN committees.
